Church of San Michele Arcangelo

The foundation of the new town of Grammichele dates back to March 18th, 1693, after the earthquake that destroyed Occhiolà, the original settlement.

The first stone of the new Mother Church was laid on that date, but construction did not begin until thirty years later.

In 1724, following a project by the architect Andrea Amato, the building site was inaugurated, with the participation of many Calatino workers.

The side portal bears the date 1757, which could be the year when the church was inaugurated, although the work continued.

The lantern of the dome was built in 1798, while the decorative stuccoes in the interior were completed two years later by the Fantauzzo da Barrafranca brothers.

Further restorations were carried out throughout the 20th century. It was last reopened for worship in 2011.

The Church of San Michele Arcangelo (St. Michael the Arcangel) is divided into three naves with a large transept.

The spectacular façade is preceded by a wide staircase.

The central portal, like the two lateral ones, is in carved stone and bears a dedication to the saint for whom the church is named.
