Church of Sant’Agrippina

The church is mentioned in documents dating back to 1308, but the exact date of its construction is not known.

The 15th century saw a complete rebuilding of the structure.

The statue of St. Agrippina, the patron saint of Mineo, dates back to 1518 and is made of carved and painted wood.

It was created by Vincenzo Archifel, a Neapolitan sculptor and goldsmith who had a workshop in Catania.

Badly damaged by the earthquake of 1542, the Church of Sant’Agrippina became the Mother Church of Mineo in 1582.

It was rebuilt in the first half of the 18th century after the damage caused by the earthquake of 1693.

The cycle of frescoes on the vault, depicting episodes from the life of the saint, is the work of Sebastiano Monaco at the end of the 18th century.

The plan is in the shape of a Greek cross, with three naves, as many apses and a remarkable choir.

It preserves a square crypt dug into the sandstone, which dates back to ancient construction phases.

The façade has a carved stone doorway with pairs of Doric columns on pedestals supporting a broken pediment with a large window that lights up the nave.
