The first church built in masonry in Grammichele, it has undergone numerous renovations since the destruction caused by the earthquake of 1693.
By 1713 the church was open for worship but fell into disrepair and was rebuilt and inaugurated in 1817.
However, due to construction defects, the vault collapsed in 1832, after which the church was reopened in 1844.
From 1917 to 1922 the State requisitioned it to make it a warehouse; later it suffered further damage to the roof and floor, only to be further affected by the 1990 earthquake.
The church of San Leonardo (St. Leonard) was restored and reopened to the faithful in 2007.
The building is attached to the apse of the Mother Church of San Michele Arcangelo, and the façade was left unfinished.
Notable testimonies inside are the high altar and a 17th-century crucified Christ, led by the refugees of the ancient Occhiolà to the new city of Grammichele.
