The church, formerly dedicated to St. Mary of Odigitria, was built in the 16th century in the upper part of San Michele di Ganzaria.
Damaged by the earthquake of 1693, it was restored and rebuilt over the centuries.
The Church of San Giuseppe (St. Joseph) has a single nave with a rectangular floor plan and an apse decorated with Corinthian-style stuccoes.
The façade is square and rendered, with a stone portal preceded by lava stone steps.
The upper part has a stepped profile. Inside there is an oil painting on canvas of the Greek Madonna of St. Mary of Odigitria by an unknown 16ht-century artist, depicting the landing of a ship surrounded by boats, symbolising the exodus of the Albanians from their homeland.
The painting thus seems to attest to the Greek-Albanian origin of San Michele di Ganzaria.
