Church of the Holy Saviour

The Church of the Holy Saviour was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693.

It is linked to the presence of the Benedictine Nuns in Caltagirone.

The church is a true jewel of architecture, boasting a central plan and adorned with valuable stuccoes, paintings and statues. One of its most notable features is the splendid Madonna del Monserrato, a marble sculpture created by Antonuzzo Gagini in 1532.

In 1962, the church gained more prestige when it received the mortal remains of Don Luigi Sturzo, one of Caltagirone’s most famous sons.

Don Sturzo celebrated his first mass in this church, and his mausoleum, made of yellow Siena marble and designed by architect and sculptor Ugo Tarchi, is adorned with sculptures by Francesco Nagni.
