Aquila Palace

Seat of the Town Hall of Caltagirone, it was built in the second half of the 19th century in Neoclassical style by the architect Giambattista Nicastro.

In 1845, the then-mayor Luigi Libertini facilitated the building’s purchase by the Municipality. To meet the new requirements, architect Mario De Stefano proposed a significant project to reorganise and renovate the internal and external decorations.

The project involved demolishing the old staircase, enlarging the atrium, and completely reinterpreting the façade with the addition of allegorical statues. Unfortunately, the project was never executed.

The Municipality announced a competition in 1864 for the construction of a majestic monumental staircase, which was won by architect Michele Fragapane.

Work began in 1872. The building’s rear façade, designed in Art Nouveau style, was created by architect Saverio Fragapane.
