Experimental Grain Growing Station

Founded in 1927 by Royal Decree as part of the “Battle of Wheat”, which aimed to make Italy self-sufficient in cereal production, the Experimental Grain Growing Station is in the hamlet of Santo Pietro, a short distance from the centre of Caltagirone.

It has a valuable database with the seeds of 300 varieties of different species, including all the ancient Sicilian cereals.

The station, which is part of the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, reproduces the seeds every year and donates them to farmers who continue to cultivate and preserve them.
