Its name comes from the Arabic, which identified it as “cinghialeria”, a place inhabited by wild boars.
Situated at an altitude of about 800 metres, in the southernmost part of the Erei Mountains, until the early 1960s it was rich in water and characterised by numerous oak trees, which were later replaced by eucalyptus.
At the beginning of the 2000s, some excavations brought to light necropolises, the most important of which is of Byzantine origin and is located near Piano Cannelle.
Along the road that climbs to the top you can see the so-called “Pietra Longa” (long stone), the protagonist of many legends, including the one that says it was connected to the Gravina Castle by an underground tunnel.
Mount Ganzaria is famous for its spectacular variety of wild orchids, some of which are endemic to Sicily. It is an ideal place for excursions, also thanks to the presence of an equipped area in the woods.
