Marineo Caves

To the east of the town of Licodia Eubea, along the ridge of the hills of the Marineo district, are the caves of the same name.

From the finds found in the area, it is possible to say that the site was inhabited from the Neolithic Age (5000-4300 B.C.) until the 8th-6th century B.C.

The caves, excavated since the 1980s, have petroglyphs with solar symbols, highly stylised human figures and a very realistic silhouette of a bovine.

The presence of a canal connected to a spring in one of the caves led to the belief that the site could have been a place of worship linked to the divinity of the sun, typical of the Copper Age.
