Tondo vecchio

The Tondo Vecchio stands on the ancient Via Carolina (today known as Via Roma), the road commissioned by Ferdinand III in 1766 and dedicated to his wife, to connect the city to the plateau from the bridge of San Francesco to the church of Santa Maria di Gesù.

Designed by architect Francesco Battaglia as a decorative element of the new road section, the Tondo Vecchio takes the form of a theatre cavea opening onto the western valley.

Decorated by cornices and pilasters with stone cartouches enclosing coats of arms, it was partially modified by architect Gianbattista Nicastro towards the end of the 19th century.
