Villa Vittorio Emanuele public garden

The public garden of Caltagirone is one of the largest in Sicily.

It was designed by the architect Giovan Battista Filippo Basile on the model of English parks and its construction began in 1846.

The Liberty style entrance, with its peculiar gate, is the work of the Calatino architect Saverio Fragapane.

In the central square there is a Moorish-style stage covered with polychrome majolica, while along the avenues there are terracotta vases, and ornamental majolica and terracotta made by artists.

From the entrance of Viale Principessa Maria José, going down the double staircase, there are two majolica panels by Gianni Ballarò and, in a niche, a statue of Ceres by Nicolò Barrano.

The Fountain of Flora, by the Florentine sculptor Camillo Camilliani, was previously located elsewhere and dates back to the 16th century, while the beautiful ceramic balustrade is the work of Gesualdo Vittorio Nicoletti, who made it in the mid-20th century.
