Sicilian Puppet Theatre Museum

The Puppet Company of Caltagirone was founded in 1918 by don Gaetano Russo, who directed and animated it until 1989.

In 1992 the theatre was reopened and restored to its original appearance, thanks to the owners of the puppet and marionette collection and some private individuals.

The museum, located in the same rooms, illustrates the historical evolution of the Sicilian Puppet Opera through a collection of 120 puppets dating back to 1918-1920, contemporary posters, costumes, scenarios, representations, and audiovisual supports.

The puppets, which come from the workshop of the Catania Puppet School, differ from those of Palermo in terms of size, production techniques and handling.

The exhibition is enriched by a series of cartoon keys and historical texts that inspired Russo’s performances.
